[hello???? HOW IS HE SUPPOSED TO CONVEY THAT?]
Um... I don't suppose you've found a vending machine that sells tomato soup, have you? Matsui was hoping for one, but we've had no luck.

[WELL DOES RIN WANT TO]
Not that I know of... We tried making our own, though neither Matsui nor I are skilled cooks and our ingredients were limited.

[he perks up]
If you could, I'm sure he would appreciate it. You are skilled in cooking, Rin?

[you didn't say you wanted one :pensive: goes to think of one]
Impressive. I know a few basic dishes from my mother, but truthfully, most of the food I know how to make are more... along the lines of simple meals to be eaten while on the move.

Mm. Well, the nature of a country often at war meant I was frequently on the move because of battle, or to do patrols. It wasn't until recently that I could call myself well-traveled, truthfully... but one could say that yes, it was because of a mission.
[anyway wow pig memory go! this is also where i have to make a note that the octopath format is similar to fe which means hikari is always alone in his story quests but technically his other party members could be there at some point idk schrodingers friend presences
it's a fine day for a reunion, or so it would be had rai mei's retainers not blocked your way to clan mei's castle. you best them in battle and demand passage, but it swiftly becomes unneeded when rai mei herself enters the scene (5:28 - 6:49).
--
you awaken from a dream (19:34 - 21:47), of times gone past and people lost to you. your body is sore and injured, but you have more pressing matters to take care to.
--
you pace in your cell for what feels like hours, before rai mei's retainer, kunzo, approaches. he asks if you still consider rai mei a friend, to which you answer yes without hesitation. you came here believing in your friendship, and you still have faith in her. you understand the burdens she is under, and you cannot bring yourself to hold your current imprisonment or death sentence against her.
and so he releases you, with a simple request: to free her from the shackles of fear that bind her, knowing that killing you would only trap her further. you don't need any convincing to agree.
--
you make your way to the top of the castle, where rai mei is. standing before the guillotine where she meant to execute you on the morrow, you try to reason with her once more (33:49 - 44:30, 36:42 - 41:47 is skippable unless you really want to watch a boss fight for some reason).]

Were that things different for us, and we didn't have to fight—however, if there was any conflict I could not turn away from, this would be it. I have faith in Rai Mei, though.

[he blinks in surprise when rin places his hand on his shoulder, though it's not unappreciated.]
... Mm. My family has done much to wrong her and her clan, and I understand why she feels she must place Clan Mei above all. But she and I had both long since dreamed of a peaceful future, since we were children.
[the only difference is that hikari never resigned to the notion that those ideals were naive.]
I know she can move forward, much like how I believe that there is still hope for the people here.

[he blinks again, and then twice, as though the idea is foreign to him. for all that hikari can be awkward at times, his gaze doesn't falter, and there is no doubt in his voice.]
... A peaceful world is built on hope and faith—that we can obtain happiness through kindness and fellowship. Though, the unfortunate reality is that a great deal of blood has been spilled to reach this point, and I know that should I return to life, I must contribute to it.
[there is, at least, one person he must cut down, and it's not like the idea doesn't terrify him at all. but even so—
also i'm sorry to poor normie rin who has to listen to this speech.]
But I would not walk this path if I didn't believe that a better future awaited everyone at the end of it. My blade exists to guide my country and sever its cycle of violence—not to be swung without conviction.

does not mention it's the first time he's had to fight a friend]
... It has been difficult, at times. But I am fortunate to have friends by my side, and I know that no matter how long the night is, I will see the dawn with them.

[he shakes his head.]
You needn't apologize. If it isn't presumptuous of me to say, it seemed you were coming from a place of pain, rather than of malice.
